MD Program Application FAQ

  • Where do I officially apply to IU School of Medicine?

    All applications are submitted through the AMCAS system. After verification, applications are processed through the IU School of Medicine Admissions Office in Indianapolis. Only applicants invited for an interview receive a request to provide supplemental information and complete the IU Indianapolis Graduate Program application.

  • Can applicants request an appointment to speak with someone in the Admissions Office?

    Prospective applicants and applicants who interviewed, but did not receive an offer of acceptance, may schedule an appointment by calling 317-274-3772 or email inmedadm@iu.edu

  • Can I get a tour of campus?

    Yes. To request a tour of the Indianapolis campus medical school applicants and prospects should  email the Admissions Ambassadors. To schedule a tour at other IU School of Medicine campuses, please contact the site direct. 

  • Do I need a college degree to apply to medical school?

    Yes, medical school matriculants must have been awarded a baccalaureate degree unless applying and accepted through an IU School of Medicine program which has waived the requirement. To apply applicants must have a minimum of 90 credit hours from a U.S. or Canadian institution and permanent resident visa.  

  • Do I need to complete all prerequisites before applying?

    No, prerequisites may be in progress. To matriculate all prerequisites must be complete.

  • Does IU School of Medicine accept Advanced Placement (AP) credit?

    Yes, the MD Admissions Committee accepts some AP credit. The Committee strongly recommends prerequisites be completed at a 4-year university. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to determine which courses will fulfill requirements.

  • Does IU School of Medicine accept international students?

    Indiana University School of Medicine, MD program does not accept international students. Applicants must have a permanent resident visa at time of application or be a U.S. citizen.

  • If I have questions regarding my residency status who should I contact?

    Questions regarding residency should be directed to the Office of the Registrar. You may also view the requirements and contact information. Please do not complete a residency application unless requested to do so by IU School of Medicine Office of Admissions.

  • What happens after I submit my application?

    The Office of Admissions will send an email confirming receipt of the AMCAS application. Applicants selected for an interview will be receive a Supplemental Instructions email with instructions for completing the IU Indianapolis Graduate Program application. Applicants will not be scheduled for an interview until the Graduate Program application and fee ($70) has been submitted.

  • What is the best undergraduate major for medical school preparation?

    The best major is one that meets the applicant’s academic goals. The IU School of Medicine MD Admissions Committee does not recommend or give preference to any major. For example, applicants have matriculated with degrees in English, biology, music, law and interior design.

  • When should I submit my application to the IU School of Medicine MD program?

    Applicants should submit an application when the application process begins on June 1, as processing may take up to eight weeks.
